TITLE : Leopard chase (part 1)
After a quarter of an hour of an exceptional close up with a splendid Leopard he started looking inquisitively and seemed to be very interested by ...something. The six of us with our binoculars were unable to spot anything and could not believe it was something serious. A striking demonstration of the sighting/earing/smelling abilities of this powerful predator.

Then he moved on in the night stalking whatever prey it was. We followed his move until he was in close reach of a ... Jackal (Canis mesomelas). There the scene turned incredible. The Jackal noticed the Leopard. He courageously faced to him and barked furiously...And the mighty, but now unconcealed Leopard, escaped ingloriously. But the Jackal pushed further and ran after the Leopard. The hunter became the hunted for a while (if I can say so despite the weight gap between Leopard/60kg and Jackal/12kg). But the Leopard didn't stand the shame, turned back and chased the Jackal again. But soon he will give up and both disappeared in the night. A scene I will remember forever. Only a part of it is on the video.

A large pride of lions in the area of Kwando in Botswana has specialised in elephant hunting. The quantity of elephants in this area plus the number of hunters in the pride (about 18) makes this very rare situation possible. In fact, it's not unsual to see lions killing baby elephants. But here they are facing adults or sub-adults, generally isolated bachelors. I did not see the killing itself that must be a very difficult moment to stand.
